SE SO NEON mark the one-year anniversary of their acclaimed debut album NOW with a striking new visual for “p and q,” a song that may be one of the clearest representations of the band’s restless, genre-resistant spirit.
Released August 14, the official music video arrives as more than a simple anniversary celebration. It expands the emotional world of NOW into something physical, confrontational, and deliberately imperfect, matching the song’s unstable energy with imagery that feels equally unpredictable.
At the center of SE SO NEON is songwriter, producer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Soyoon Hwang, whose work both with the band and through her solo project So!YoON! has consistently blurred the boundaries between psychedelic rock, blues, vintage pop, new wave, and electronic music. With “p and q,” she strips away some of the polish and lets instinct take over.
What immediately stands out about “p and q” is how naturally it feels unfinished in the best possible way. There is a looseness to the track that gives it a sense of movement, as though the song is discovering itself while you’re listening.
Soyoon has described the track as the song on NOW that most closely reflects the present moment. That idea becomes especially apparent in the way the vocals and instrumentation interact. Instead of presenting a perfectly controlled narrative, the track feels like a stream of thoughts, emotions, and observations colliding in real time. The lyrics themselves were created through improvisation. While finishing the song in Los Angeles, Soyoon pulled phrases from her own notes and used them to construct the vocal performance, ultimately keeping the first take.
That decision gives “p and q” an immediacy that a heavily rehearsed performance might have lost. Even the title carries a sense of duality. The lowercase “p” and “q” mirror one another visually, resembling two figures facing each other a fitting image for a song concerned with observation, connection, and the strange relationship between ourselves and the world around us.
