Spanish Love Songs are entering a new chapter and they aren’t looking toward the past for answers. The Los Angeles-based band have officially announced their fifth full-length record, Future Nausea, arriving November 6 via Pure Noise Records. The album was produced by Chris Walla, formerly of Death Cab for Cutie, alongside Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties, bringing together two distinct creative perspectives for what promises to be one of the band’s most confrontational releases yet.
Where heartland rock often finds its strength in memories of home, endless highways, and romanticized versions of America, Future Nausea takes that familiar scale and turns it toward an increasingly uncertain future. The record embraces the genre’s expansive, emotionally charged sound while stripping away any sense of nostalgia as a source of comfort. Instead, Spanish Love Songs confront what lies ahead with tension, frustration, and the uncomfortable realization that the future may be far more difficult than the present.
That outlook comes sharply into focus on the album’s newly released lead single, “Good American.” Serving as a central piece of the record’s larger narrative, the track examines patriotism, military service, economic desperation, and what happens when someone discovers that the institution they devoted themselves to no longer has a place for them.
Singer Dylan Slocum explains that the song began taking shape after he encountered stories about transgender members of the military including career soldiers around his own age being pushed aside. Those stories brought him back to conversations and experiences with veterans from years earlier, eventually inspiring a narrative about someone who gives everything to an institution before being discarded by it. The result is one of the band’s most openly furious songs to date.
According to Slocum, the band deliberately kept the recording stripped down and forceful, allowing the anger at the heart of “Good American” to remain front and center. Rather than burying its message beneath layers of production, Spanish Love Songs wanted something loud, direct, and physical; a song built to be screamed back from a crowd.
And the timing only made the track’s message feel more unsettling. Slocum notes that approximately a week after the band recorded “Good American,” the United States bombed Iran, an event that further underscored the song’s themes and the larger unease running through Future Nausea.
With Future Nausea, Spanish Love Songs aren’t attempting to recreate an idealized past. They’re staring directly into the uncertainty ahead and turning that anxiety, anger, and frustration into something loud enough to dance and shout along to.
