Without Warning from Finnland released their brand new single “Breed” ft Chris Harms that’s authentic, raw, and filled with mechanical tension that represents the soundscape the band creates. The single lacks warmth, but invites darkness and the coldness that comes along with it. “Breed” throws away restraint and burns it to the ground with how powerful both vocalists are that makes the single easy to describe in one word. Chaos.
Interviewer: For new fans that just discovered your band, can you give us some insight about the band’s history and what led you to create the style of music you have?
Micha: “Without Warning was officially born in 2020 and it was quite clear to us from the beginning, that we wanted to create metal music that was quite heavily infused with electronic elements. In the early stages before officially being formed, the desired style Without Warning was going for was closer to Amaranthe and we used “pop-metal” as our genre in the beginning. But after our first single we already took a turn towards a more darker route. I’ve (Micha) always been very into horror movies and everything eerie, so I influenced our musical style a lot. So both musically and visually, through every song, we got more darker and industrial. It felt really natural and we all liked the mystery and harshness it brought. Through this evolution we also understood, that the genre we actually represent through style and structure, is metalcore. We have a fictional lore connected to our band and creating that also contributed to our evolution.“
Interviewer: What inspired the band’s name? Is there an interesting story behind it?
Micha: “Before being officially formed, the two founding members used the name “7 Second Warning” which actually didn’t have any deeper meaning and was invented by a previous unofficial member to use as the band project name. Once the crew was set we didn’t feel any connection to the name but liked the word “warning”. We started to play around and liked the thought of having a double “W” name – then Without Warning came to be. There’s a certain kind of bad omen to it, we, us – came without warning. Life changing events may come without a warning. “
Interviewer: What bands or artists have influenced you the most?
Micha: “We take influence from a lot of genres and bands. To name some which we look towars soundwise are Northlane, Mick Gordon and Spiritbox for example. But it can still be anything from EDM to pop music, bits and pieces here and there. Lyrically I’ve (Micha) always been extremely inspired by Vessel from Sleep Token. Sleep Token is my soulmate in music and I am deeply connected to the band and Vessel’s style of communicating. Though our themes and style differ a lot, his expression works as a guiding inspiration for me.“
Interviewer: “Breed” is the band’s new single; Was there a specific moment or experience that sparked the idea?
Micha: “Our guitarist had made a little intro sound, the one actually in the official song intro. That was all he had and I got immediately hooked. He didn’t continue on the song for a good while and unfortunately even lost the original file. A couple of months later he had worked on a new song idea and I pushed him to revive the old industrial ambience he had once created, because I felt it had so much potential and shouldn’t be abandoned. He recreated the ambience and I gave him some references on how I feel the song could evolve. I also had an inital idea of the theme which further inspired our guitarist to produce the song in a desired style. The song found its final form quite quickly after that and it was exactly how I imagined – raw, industrial and unapologetic.”
Interviewer: What emotions were you hoping to capture?
Micha: “I wanted to create discomfort, rawness and a little bit of erotic, in a underwordly way. Musically the song is very industrial, it almost has a hint of that 90’s industrial NuMetal. The song theme talks about the human nature and species almost being a false in our creation. How humanity was God’s error and we were never meant to exist. But something went wrong, we evolved while still holding on to our primitive destructive nature. And that is why we destroy the earth and its resources. But not only do we take advantage of the world, we’ve also turned on our own species. We are fuelled by greed and violence, and somehow think it is our given right to take without giving. Overall, our songs tackle various important topics, sometimes through metaphor, sometimes through real life situations. At the core of our message is to make people think about their actions towards each other and the very world we live in. Our upcoming debut album will be a wholesome piece which tackles these societal issues, a journey through humanity.“
Interviewer: Were there any challenges while writing or recording the song?
Micha: “Fortunately we were very lucky with the process. We take care of everything inside the band, everything from recording, composing, mixing and mastering to all the visual and marketing materials. So basically we get to decide our own schedules. We took our time with this piece and also made sure to be flexible, so Chris could take his time between touring to work on his parts. Even though the whole process was conducted remotely, everything went very smoothly. Chris is such a champ and made sure we had everything we needed.”
Interviewer: What led the band to decide to have Chris Harms featured in the new single? What did Chris add to the single?
Micha: “When we thought about options I threw the wild card of asking Chris. His unique voice and charisma appealed to me so much and it was a huge plus that Lord Of The Lost had musical similarities with us. We know German fans really love the combination of metal and electronic music, and that is one market we really want to enter, so everything about Chris from his talent to his origin was a perfect fit. The guys thought it would be a great idea and we took a leap of faith and just asked Chris. He was immediately excited and felt the song would be an awesome project. Hearing him get excited and believing in this project, in us, meant the world for us. Chris added exactly what we were hoping – unique vocal performance and presence, also insight. I think our vocals work perfectly together and we are very alike. Just a perfect fit! We are forever grateful for his participation.”
Interviewer: How does this track represent your current sound?
Micha: “Without Warning has and will always be very fused. With other words, wheres’t our current single can sound extremily harsh and raw, we also produce songs which can be very melancholic and soft. We don’t want to draw a line to tightly, but rather leave room for each song to become an individual. “Breed” highlights our industrial tones very well and it brings out my harsher vocal technique. It is definitely on the more heavier song but still very “us”. In most of our songs I use my clean vocals with the harsh ones, so this song is an exception. Chris does the cleans instead of me.”
Interviewer: How have fans responded to the song so far?
Micha: “So far it’s only been positive and we are so happy! We’ve gained some new followers and welcome everyone with open arms to the world of Without Warning. We are so grateful for every share, like and comment. It means so much to bands when fans interact with bands. We live in a time where bands are so dependent on social media interactions, so seeing people take the time to engage is so important to us. Through that, fans help us get seen and makes our growht possible. We love you!“
Interviewer: If this song could be summed up in one word, what would it be and why?
Micha: “I’d say “chaos”. It’s not a complicated word but a strong one. It represents the chaos of disorder, the chaos of discmfort, the chaos of aggression and the chaos of greed. I think it sums it up quite well.”
