LA-based live music series Songs with Strings is continuing its mission of putting a fresh spin on original songs, with its newest performance spotlighting rising pop/R&B artist Diamond Cafe and his latest single, “Angel Dust.”
For the new live session, Diamond Cafe trades the track’s original electro-funk atmosphere for something far more organic. Recorded on Melrose Avenue near Community Goods, the performance strips the song down and rebuilds it through an expressive string quartet arrangement performed by wholesoul, with Diamond Cafe delivering the vocals.
The result offers an entirely different perspective on “Angel Dust.” Where the original leans into electronic textures and funk-inspired production, the quartet arrangement introduces warmth, drama, and a more intimate quality, allowing the melody and vocals to take on new emotional weight.
The performance is the latest chapter in Songs with Strings, a series built around the idea of bringing emerging artists together with live string musicians to completely reinterpret their music. Rather than simply recreating studio recordings, each session gives the artists an opportunity to hear their songs through an entirely different musical lens.
Diamond Cafe now joins a growing lineup of artists who have participated in the series, including Flyana Boss, Cure for Parnoiai, and India Carney.
With “Angel Dust,” Songs with Strings once again demonstrates how dramatically a song can transform when its production is stripped back and rebuilt from the ground up. Diamond Cafe’s performance gives the single a more intimate edge while showcasing the versatility of both the artist and the musicians behind the arrangement.
