Avery Cochrane is kicking open the door to her next chapter with “Toy Gun,” the vibrant new single serving as the first preview of her forthcoming debut album. Released September 9 via Sonderview / S-Curve Records, the track introduces a bolder side of the rising pop artist while keeping the playful, larger-than-life personality that has quickly become part of her signature.
On the surface, “Toy Gun” is bright, catchy, and impossible to sit still to. Beneath its infectious synth-pop production, however, Cochrane tackles the emotional exhaustion that can come from trying to appear confident in a relationship when you’re anything but secure. The song turns that contradiction into something sharp, colorful, and deeply relatable. For Cochrane, the track was born from the realization that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is walk away.
“I wrote this song about the freedom of leaving a relationship that was emotionally draining,” Cochrane explains. “To me, acting ‘toughened with a toy gun’ means assuming the role of the brave and secure partner, despite being unsure of the relationship yourself.”
That combination of vulnerability and theatrical pop energy arrives at an especially exciting moment in Cochrane’s career. The singer-songwriter has also revealed plans for her first-ever headlining tour, the WEAPONS OF IRIDESCENSE TOUR, which launches October 3 in Washington, DC. The 13-date North American run will make stops in major markets including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, with a performance at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood.
Cochrane’s rapid rise has been fueled by an unapologetically pop-forward approach to songwriting, visual storytelling, and self-expression. Her debut EP, Male Validation and Other Drugs, established her as an artist unafraid to lean into camp, humor, queer femininity, sex positivity, and brutally honest observations about modern relationships. The project has earned comparisons to artists including ABBA, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan, while Cochrane’s growing catalog has accumulated more than 20 million streams.
Her breakout track “Shapeshifting on a Saturday Night” has become an especially powerful calling card, surpassing 46 million social views and earning a placement in Amazon Prime’s Off Campus. Her growing profile has also landed her recognition from Teen Vogue, which dubbed her “your next favorite pop star.”
