Alisan Porter is opening the door to a deeply personal chapter with the release of her new album, PORTER, available now across streaming platforms. Marking the singer-songwriter’s fifth studio album, the 10-track project reflects on the messy, complicated, and often transformative realities of adulthood through a collection of songs Porter describes as “The Ten Commandments of PORTER.”
Rather than presenting another collection of songs about becoming the person you’re supposed to be, PORTER focuses on what happens once you’ve already spent years becoming that person and realize there is still plenty left to figure out.
Porter approaches her mid-40s with an unusual combination of humor, vulnerability, frustration, and self-awareness. The album explores the emotional territory that comes with motherhood, marriage, friendships, ambition, aging, loss, boundaries, and starting over. It is a record about recognizing which battles are worth fighting, which relationships can no longer be repaired, and when moving forward requires finally releasing the things you’ve been carrying.
The project serves as the latest chapter in what Porter calls her “Perimenopop” era. The term reflects the album’s larger perspective on womanhood: honest about the physical and emotional changes that come with aging, but equally interested in the freedom, confidence, and clarity that can emerge alongside them.
Across its ten songs, PORTER traces a progression through lessons Porter has learned throughout her own life. Grief, resentment, destructive patterns, control, love, surrender, and acceptance all become part of the conversation. Instead of presenting those experiences as neatly resolved, Porter allows them to remain complicated.
That honesty is reflected in the album’s sound as well. PORTER was recorded live at Chaplin Recording, giving the performances a foundation built around musicians playing together in real time. Porter worked alongside longtime collaborator Drew McKeon and producer Sam Barsh, who expanded those organic recordings with contemporary production, electronic elements, and carefully considered textures.
The result avoids feeling trapped in any particular era. Elements of Laurel Canyon-style songwriting, soul, alternative pop, and modern rock come together around Porter’s distinctive voice, creating an album that feels rooted in traditional musicianship while still sounding distinctly current.
At the center of the record is “Love Bomber,” the album’s focus track and one of its clearest examples of Porter’s ability to turn complicated emotional experiences into something sharp, funny, and immediately relatable. The song examines love and relationships through a lens that is both self-aware and unafraid to poke fun at the absurdities that can come with them.
While PORTER tackles some heavy subjects, it never treats adulthood as something that has to be approached with solemnity. Porter makes room for humor alongside heartbreak, reflection alongside frustration, and acceptance alongside uncertainty.
Ultimately, PORTER is less concerned with offering answers than it is with acknowledging the questions that emerge in the middle of life. It is an album about realizing that you cannot control everyone around you, that some things cannot be fixed, and that letting go can sometimes be its own form of survival.
For Porter, this chapter isn’t about learning how to grow up. It’s about discovering what comes after.
