Melbourne dream-pop artist Meila is stepping into a softer, more carefree side of love with her latest single, “Makes Sense,” the newest preview of her forthcoming sophomore EP, The Good Place, arriving October 30.

Rather than overcomplicating romance, “Makes Sense” lives in the moments when everything simply falls into place. Built around breezy instrumentation and an effortlessly warm atmosphere, the track captures the feeling of being with someone who allows you to drop your guard completely. There is no performance, no pressure to be perfect and no need to constantly question whether you’re doing things right just the freedom to exist as yourself.

That sense of ease is central to what Meila wanted the song to communicate. “Makes Sense” explores the kind of connection where overthinking finally quiets down and being yourself feels natural. Love, in this case, isn’t presented as something heavy or complicated; it can be silly, spontaneous and genuinely fun.

The track was produced and engineered in London alongside Ewan Vickery, with Simon Lam of Armlock handling the mix. The resulting production gives Meila plenty of space to breathe, pairing her dream-pop sensibilities with a relaxed, sun-soaked quality reminiscent of Clairo and Men I Trust, while maintaining an identity entirely her own.

“This song is about finding someone that you can drop the act around, stop overthinking, and just be yourself,” Meila explains. “It’s about the relief of something feeling easy and real, and remembering that love doesn’t always have to be so serious.”

That philosophy extends beyond one relationship and into the larger world of The Good Place. The upcoming EP follows Meila’s debut project, 20 Something, which arrived just seven months ago and has since surpassed 780,000 streams. While her first EP introduced listeners to her world, The Good Place represents a shift toward appreciating that world while actually living in it.

At its core, the project is about resisting the urge to constantly chase whatever comes next. Instead of waiting for the next achievement, location, relationship or version of yourself to finally bring happiness, Meila turns her attention toward the ordinary moments already happening around her.

“I’ve always been guilty of thinking that happiness is just around the corner,” she says. “The Good Place finds comfort in ordinary life, being present, and letting things be a little simpler.”

“Makes Sense” feels like a natural introduction to that mindset. It’s a song about realizing that perhaps happiness doesn’t need to be dissected or earned. Sometimes it can simply be found in laughing with someone, feeling completely comfortable in your own skin and recognizing that nothing needs to be fixed in that moment. Meila will celebrate the release of The Good Place with an official EP launch show on November 27 at sBase, the heritage creative space located on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. Special guests will be announced soon, with tickets available now.
