Some artists make a comeback. Deidre made a resurrection.
The Austin-based singer-songwriter, born Deidre Rodriguez, spent nearly two years bedridden, on dialysis, before undergoing a double kidney and liver transplant in late 2023. She calls that chapter her catacombs—a long, dark passage she wasn’t sure she’d survive. She did, and she brought a song back with her.
That song is “Catacombs,” her debut solo single, out now on all major streaming platforms. Blending dream pop, folk, and world music influences from artists like Fairuz, Massive Attack, Loreena McKennitt, and Kate Bush, the track is a deeply personal reflection on survival and transformation.
Before her illness, Rodriguez fronted the Americana-rock band Red and the Rebels, earning a devoted Austin following. After the band’s end, she embraced a new creative path shaped by world music, ancient mythology, and her spiritual practice, crafting an artistic identity rooted in resilience and renewal.
Her voice is the centerpiece. Soft without being fragile, Deidre delivers each lyric with the conviction of someone who has lived every word. There’s an understated vulnerability that never tips into melodrama, making the song’s emotional impact feel authentic rather than performative.
