There is a quiet honesty woven throughout Sweetbreads’ latest single “Open Mic”; a song that feels less like a performance and more like an intimate conversation unfolding under the dim lights of a small venue. The project of New York City-based singer-songwriter Melody Stolpp, Sweetbreads transforms a deeply personal moment into a reflective piece about ambition, addiction, loneliness, and the ways people search for connection.
Built around delicate, ethereal instrumentation and Sweetbreads’ captivating vocals, “Open Mic” carries a dreamlike quality while remaining grounded in raw emotion. The track creates an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and fragile, allowing every lyric to sit with the weight of the story being told. Rather than simply describing pain, Sweetbreads examines the complicated emotions that surround it the guilt, confusion, hope, and desire to understand the people we love.
“I was sitting in this dingy dive bar waiting hours for my turn to play one song amongst a sea of people who were there for the same reason,” Sweetbreads shares. “I felt kind of pathetic and self-involved chasing what seemed like a dying dream. Watching my friend struggle made me think about my own obsessions and addictions, and the things we all cling to in order to escape reality.” – Sweetbreads
