For over a decade, Fathom Farewell has carved out a place in the heavy music scene by blending crushing riffs, emotionally charged vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics centered around humanity, personal growth, and the consequences of our choices. Since forming in 2014, the New England based metalcore band has evolved through lineup changes, personal struggles, and the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, but their mission has remained clear: create music that means something.
At the center of Fathom Farewell’s music is a desire to inspire reflection. Their songs explore everything from personal battles and emotional scars to humanity’s relationship with the planet and each other. Rather than simply documenting pain, the band uses their music as a way to process, question, and encourage change.
Vocalist Alex opens up about the band’s origins, the challenges of maintaining a serious band for over a decade, the stories behind their socially conscious lyrics, unforgettable performances alongside bands like Sevendust and I Prevail, and the future they are still chasing , a chance to take their music beyond the regions they’ve already conquered.
For vocalist Alex, the original goal behind Fathom Farewell was simple: create music with memorable riffs and vocal melodies without overcomplicating the process. Over the years, that vision has expanded into something much larger, a platform for reflection, awareness, and connection.
The band’s name itself reflects that philosophy. “Fathom Farewell” represents a moment of contemplation questioning whether humanity’s harmful behaviors, both individually and collectively, are leading toward consequences that cannot be undone. Through their lyrics, the band creates what Alex describes as “cautionary tales,” exploring what can happen when people fail to look inward, show patience toward one another, or recognize the impact of their actions.
Throughout their journey, Fathom Farewell has experienced numerous lineup changes, each era bringing its own personality and creative direction. Rather than viewing those changes as setbacks, Alex sees them as defining moments that shaped the band’s evolution.
“Each lineup has had its own personality and identity and struggles that were entirely separate from the others,” he explains.
That constant evolution has been one of the biggest lessons learned over the band’s decade-long career. According to Alex, being part of a serious band requires a level of commitment that many musicians don’t fully understand until they experience it firsthand. Balancing careers, finances, personal responsibilities, touring, and the constant demands of maintaining a band can create challenges that test even the most dedicated musicians.
Having remained through every lineup change, Alex has watched countless members experience those realities. However, he believes the current lineup featuring Dustin, Chris, and EJ represents the strongest version of Fathom Farewell yet.
“They all bring different things of equal value to the table,” Alex shares. “It actually feels like the first lineup where the initial aspirations I had coming into this band a decade ago of touring and getting our music out into the world might actually be possible to realize.”
That drive has pushed Fathom Farewell beyond writing about personal struggles and toward addressing larger issues affecting society. Much of the band’s music stems from Alex’s deep emotional connection to the world around him, particularly humanity’s relationship with the planet and each other.
From witnessing environmental destruction to learning about historical tragedies and human cruelty, Alex found himself carrying emotions he didn’t know how to process until music became an outlet. Influenced by experiences from childhood, his upbringing, and discovering bands like System of a Down, those feelings eventually became the foundation for Fathom Farewell’s message.
At the heart of the band’s music is a desire to inspire listeners not necessarily by telling them what to think, but by offering a space where they can find whatever they need.
“If they need reassurance that someone else cares, we care, deeply,” Alex says. “If they need a fire lit for motivation, we hope to be that fire. If they need a reminder that their existence is of vital importance, we hope to be that reminder.”
While the band’s music often carries heavy themes, Alex believes art itself should never come with a required purpose. Instead, every artist should be free to create from whatever place inspires them.
“Art is so simple yet so complex. It can be everything. It can be nothing,” he explains. “I use art to express what’s in my heart.”
Over the years, Fathom Farewell has shared stages with major acts including Sevendust, I Prevail, The Devil Wears Prada, Currents, and Volumes, while also making appearances at major events like Vans Warped Tour and the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. One of the band’s most unforgettable moments came when they opened for Sevendust during the band’s 20th anniversary tour at the Worcester Palladium a milestone made even more meaningful because Sevendust remains one of Alex’s favorite bands of all time.
Despite everything the band has accomplished, Fathom Farewell is far from finished. Their next goal is clear: reaching a national touring audience and bringing their music to new places.
“We are DYING to be added to a national tour,” Alex says. “We’ve done quite literally every single thing a band can do in a region.”
With their newest material, including “Nightfall” and upcoming single “The Light,” Fathom Farewell feels they are entering their strongest chapter yet. The songs represent the current lineup’s growth and the culmination of years spent refining their sound.
Looking ahead, the band’s dream remains simple: touring the world with friends while continuing to create music that provides a safe place for anyone who believes humanity can do better.
For Fathom Farewell, the goal has never been just to make heavy music. It has been about creating a reminder that people, relationships, and the planet we call home are worth fighting for.
