Teenage Fanclub are entering a new chapter with “Be With You Tonight,” the latest single from their upcoming 13th studio album, Do Not Dare To Dream, arriving October 9 via Merge Records. Built around shimmering guitars, delicate piano, Mellotron strings, and a hazy burst of fuzzed-out guitar, the track carries an unmistakable sense of ease and contentment.
At the center of the song is Norman Blake, drawing directly from a period of personal happiness following his move to the countryside outside Glasgow. Rather than reaching for something complicated, Blake turns inward, allowing his own experiences and wellbeing to shape the song. There is something refreshing about that honesty; the track doesn’t try to manufacture drama when simply feeling good is enough.
That sense of openness carries throughout Do Not Dare To Dream. Following 2023’s Nothing Lasts Forever, the album finds Teenage Fanclub continuing to lean into the melodic guitars, layered harmonies, and understated songwriting that have defined the band for decades. Blake and Raymond McGinley, joined by Euros Childs, Francis Macdonald, and David McGowan, approached the new record with less emphasis on having everything figured out before entering the studio. Instead, they allowed the musicians around them to influence where the songs ultimately went.
That collaborative approach gives the album a distinctly lived-in quality. The arrangements are warm without becoming overly polished, with acoustic instrumentation, organ, synthesizers, and intertwining guitars creating plenty of room for each musician’s personality. As McGinley describes it, the goal isn’t to chase some perfect definition of what a great record should sound like, but to create something that feels unmistakably connected to the people who made it.
The album’s title comes from Blake’s “I Do Not Dare To Dream,” a song that questions the idea that optimism alone can solve everything. Do Not Dare To Dream doesn’t ignore the uncertainty of the world, but it refuses to let that uncertainty completely overshadow the good that can still be found. There is resilience here, but it arrives quietly in everyday moments, personal growth, friendship, music, and simply recognizing when life is in a better place.
Much of that atmosphere can be traced to where the album was recorded: Black Bay Studio on Scotland’s remote Great Bernera island. Surrounded by crashing waves and ancient ruins, the band found themselves recording in a setting that naturally encouraged reflection. The studio’s Domus church organ and collection of synthesizers also became part of the album’s sonic palette, adding unexpected depth to songs such as “Over And Over.”
After nearly four decades together, Teenage Fanclub sound less interested in proving anything and more comfortable simply making music on their own terms. Do Not Dare To Dream appears to embrace that perspective wholeheartedly. “Be With You Tonight” captures the lighter side of that outlook—a song about happiness, connection, and appreciating where life has brought you.
As Blake and McGinley reflect on the band’s long journey, there is a beautiful simplicity to their perspective: decades can pass almost unnoticed when you’re doing something you love. And with Do Not Dare To Dream, Teenage Fanclub continue to prove that some things don’t need to be rushed especially music built to last.
