For Power Take Off, music is deeply connected to where they come from. The family-driven rock band brings that perspective to their latest single, “Cornfields at Midnight,” released August 18 via ANRGIRL/Betachain and distributed by FUGA/Universal.
The new track captures the band’s high-energy approach while taking a more reflective look at change, memory, and the disappearing landscapes of rural America. Rather than simply delivering another straight-ahead rock song, Power Take Off use “Cornfields at Midnight” to tell a story about watching familiar communities transform over time.
The single arrives after the band reached an important milestone with “Dixie Cup,” which has passed 100,000 streams within only a few months. Produced by Malcolm Springer and recorded at Stoner Creek Studios, the studio owned by Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Peter Keys, the track helped introduce Power Take Off’s sound to an even wider audience.
At the center of the group are Scott and Ayden, a father-and-son team whose musical partnership began in 2019. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the pair started working on songs together in the basement studio at their family home. Those early sessions eventually grew into something much bigger, laying the groundwork for the band they have today.
Scott brings decades of experience to the project. A fourth-generation farmer and truck driver who has spent more than 35 years involved in music, he previously played drums before moving into the frontman role. Ayden, meanwhile, has been behind the kit from a young age and has developed into an energetic and accomplished drummer. That family connection is especially important on “Cornfields at Midnight,” which draws heavily from Scott’s own experiences growing up around farming communities.
As development continues to reshape rural areas, Scott has watched farmland and small towns disappear, replaced by new construction and expanding urban areas. The song grew from those observations, particularly the feeling of seeing places that once felt permanent gradually become unrecognizable.
The track’s central idea is summed up by the lyric about a “concreted city” replacing what was once their hometown. For Scott, however, the song isn’t meant to tell listeners what they should think. Instead, it offers a personal perspective on the changes happening around him and opens the door for a larger conversation about what gets left behind when communities evolve.
That connection to their roots is something Power Take Off carry into their live performances as well. The band’s current lineup features Ethan “Hank” Schluter and Mike “Cowboy” Delp on guitar, alongside Jakob “JR” on bass. Together, the five musicians have taken their energetic live show across the country, including tours alongside established national acts.
The father-and-son relationship creates another memorable element during their concerts. At certain shows, Scott moves back behind the drum kit while Ayden takes over lead vocals. The switch gives audiences the opportunity to see both musicians in a completely different role while showcasing just how much versatility exists within the band.
Musically, “Cornfields at Midnight” stays true to Power Take Off’s rock-driven identity while benefiting from a polished studio sound. With production from Chuck Alkazian, the song balances the band’s raw performance energy with a more refined recording, allowing its emotional message to sit alongside its heavier rock foundation. Power Take Off recently carried that energy to the stage at Taste of Madison in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 5, continuing to build momentum through festivals and live performances across the country.
With “Cornfields at Midnight,” the band isn’t simply looking back. They’re documenting a changing part of their world through the music they know best, loud, direct, personal rock ’n’ roll.
