LAPÊCHE is taking the emotional world of Autotelic beyond the record itself this winter, joining forces with Endearments for a co-headlining run through the Midwest and Northeast this December.
The Brooklyn-based band will bring its latest album, Autotelic, to stages in Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, New Haven, Jersey City, Medford, and Brooklyn, with the tour offering a chance to experience the record’s atmospheric weight in a live setting. Tickets are currently available for the December dates.
Released through Tiny Engines, Autotelic is less concerned with providing neat answers than it is with existing inside uncertainty. The album takes its title from the concept of creating or experiencing something simply for its own sake, an idea that runs through the record’s approach to movement, emotion, and self-discovery. Rather than rushing toward resolution, LAPÊCHE allows its songs to linger in the spaces between grief, healing, change, and acceptance.
That approach also marks a shift in the band’s sonic palette. The sharper edges of post-punk are softened by shoegaze haze, gothic textures, restrained melodies, and an almost meditative sense of space. Produced by Alex Newport, whose credits include At The Drive-In, Bloc Party, and Death Cab for Cutie, and recorded in Joshua Tree, the album carries an expansive quality that feels inseparable from the environment in which it was made.
Songs including “Double Knotted,” “Autotelic Nosebleed,” “I Heart NY,” and “Happy 4U” highlight different sides of that world. Instead of relying on oversized climaxes, LAPÊCHE often lets repetition, atmosphere, and subtle shifts do the heavy lifting. Guitars shimmer rather than simply crash forward, rhythms maintain a steady pulse, and melodies feel deliberately hypnotic.
At the center of it all is vocalist and songwriter Krista Holly Diem, whose original LAPÊCHE project began in 2016 before evolving into the collaborative Brooklyn band it is today. She is joined by longtime members Dave Diem on bass and Drew DeMaio on guitar, alongside drummer Colin Brooks, known for his work with Samiam.
There is a deeply personal foundation underneath the album’s restraint. Krista and Dave are married and share a long-term sobriety journey, bringing experiences of healing, honesty, and learning to remain present into the creative process. Those experiences aren’t treated as a simple narrative device; instead, they inform the emotional perspective running throughout Autotelic.
“Happy 4U” sits within that tension, exploring how happiness for someone else can coexist with sadness and complicated feelings of your own. Elsewhere, “When Are You From,” “The Alien Dove,” and “Autotelic Nosebleed” move through mourning, tenderness, repetition, and release, giving the album a sense of emotional continuity even when its individual songs occupy very different spaces.
LAPÊCHE’s history has already carried the band well beyond its Brooklyn beginnings. The group has toured alongside Jawbox, shared stages with Torche and Do Make Say Think, and received recognition from outlets including Atwood Magazine, Bandcamp, FLOOD Magazine, Magnet Magazine, NPR, and Under the Radar.
Now, with Autotelic at the center of its live set, LAPÊCHE is heading into a run of intimate rooms alongside Endearments bringing a record built around slowing down, paying attention, and allowing complicated emotions to exist without forcing them into a resolution.
