Invent Animate performed such a memorable set on May 17 at House of Blues in Myrtle Beach that left myself and other attendees speechless. Waiting for the band to start their set felt like we were all ready to combust from anticipation and adrenaline. When the lights started to dim and the venue became darker, we knew it was time. As the musicians started to walk onto the stage; the crowd behind me went from being silent that completely shifted into screams of excitement.
The way the venue transformed into something more cinematic that filled the air with ambience and emotional chaos. When Marc (Vocals) stepped onto that stage; within seconds he turned the atmosphere more visceral and you felt every clean vocal and instrumentation like an electric jolt. Opening the set with “Absence Persistent” started the set with a slow burn, but then it erupted like a volcano once the harsher vocals came in which carried such emotional weight that made the performance feel more personal instead of a band just putting on a performance. The next song was “Shade Astray” which is my favorite song off of the “Heavener” album and I couldn’t hold my excitement. That’s when crowd surfers started to come flying through the crowd and not one person was dropped during this time. The security guards did a great job with making sure each crowd surfer safely went over the barricade. During the breakdown of this song; Marc’s vocals were filled with texture that was weathered and jagged that led into more of a velvety tone once the cleans started again during the chorus. “False Meridian” was the next song that felt animalistic and punishing instantly, but when the cleans started; it added a more vulnerable tone, which that’s when the crowd started to sing along with the vocalist.
The venue sang with passion that blended with Marc’s which created such a cathartic moment. “Heavener” is one of those songs that carries emotional exhaustion and mirrors the moments when everything seems to be crushing down on you. This song live changed the atmosphere of the venue into something more human and vulnerable that allowed attendees to take a moment to embrace their own thoughts for a second. Between attendees singing along, you saw some crying and holding onto their friends like it was their last night on earth.
