Interviewer: “unforgettable” is built around a fleeting connection between strangers, what was the original spark or real-life moment that inspired it?
Lizzie: “There have been a few exciting moments catching eyes with a stranger across the room. Seeing where the night goes, but one time, this moment happened and now I am engaged to them 😉“
Interviewer: You describe the track as capturing a brief but lasting emotional imprint, do you think those moments are more powerful because they’re short-lived?
Lizzie: “I think a short moment that can have lasting affect on you has to be very powerful, remembering a moment of time by how you felt in the moment and the company you had is very exciting.”
Interviewer: How do you translate something as intangible as “a look across the room” into sound?
Lizzie: “I think the beat and the bassy drones give that nightclub feel and the lyrics and melody over the top give that flirty vibe, making for that interesting “look around the room” energy.”
Interviewer: This track blends dreamy vocals, drum machines, live kits, and vocoder textures, how did you decide where each sonic element should sit in the mix emotionally?
Lizzie: “I knew from the start of the production process that the drums and the bass would be doing the heavy lifting in this production. The energy and excitement that can come from those two instruments working together is unmatched, partnered with vocals and synths floating over the top gives it that sensual energetic feeling.”
Interviewer: What drew you back toward your electro-pop/dance roots for this release?
Lizzie: “I have always loved making electro-pop music shifting my instrumentation for the feeling of the song, for example my most recent song was about longing and uplifting and it really relied heaving on strings and harmony. This song needed this type of energy to really drive home the story.”
Interviewer: Were there any specific 2000s club or pop records that influenced the production direction of “unforgettable”?
Lizzie: ““Break the Ice” by Britney Spears and anything Britney has always inspired my music, as well as a later “sports car” vibe by Tate McRae.”
Interviewer: The track feels like it lives inside a smoky nightclub, did you intentionally build a “visual world” around the song while producing it?
Lizzie: “Absolutely, I wanted the intro to hit, almost like you are opening the door to a night club and the muddy synths and intense ending make for a smoky nightclub feel.“
Interviewer: There’s a strong sense of tension throughout the song, how do you maintain that without it resolving too quickly?
Lizzie: “I love writing melodies that are urging us to go somewhere I like adding notes in that may not necessarily belong in the key to add that extra tension throughout all of my song writing, it creates more colour and more excitement for the listener.“
Interviewer: You’ve spent time between Adelaide and London collaborating internationally, what’s one lesson from that period that still shapes your music today?
Lizzie: “There was a LOT I learnt from being over there and collaborating, I have learnt that Adelaide really love to show up for their artists, we have a tight knit music industry here in Adelaide and its really wonderful, London is incredible, there are so many opportunities there, but its harder to find that community in my opinion.”
Interviewer: “Unforgettable” suggests permanence in something so brief, do you believe moments like that actually stay with us, or do we reconstruct them over time?
Lizzie: “I think we definitely reconstruct them over time, we love to overthink and change things in our brain to suit us how we want. But I think if an impactful moment has made a lasting effect on you then it would be hard to remember it any way other than what happened.”
Interviewer: What’s a song from your own life that feels “unforgettable” to you?
Lizzie: “A song I always think about and always come back to is “Prescription (Extended)” by Remi Wolf. Such an amazing song and great examples of that tension and release. Such a cool artist.”
