Ohio alternative metal outfit ASAVA continue building anticipation for their upcoming album Mahjong with the release of “Saveyourself,” a haunting new single accompanied by the latest chapter in their How Long Is Forever? visual series.
Unlike the band’s previous releases, “Saveyourself” began with the film rather than the music. After completing the episode, ASAVA realized none of their existing songs captured the atmosphere they had created, leading them to compose an entirely new track tailored to the visuals. The result is a song that feels equally at home as part of a cinematic score and as a standalone alt-metal anthem.
“Saveyourself” is us tripling down on our goals of being filmmakers,” says frontman Liam Brocious. “While “Leigh” and “Rue” were shot with the intent of matching the tone and lyrics of the song, “Saveyourself” was the other way around. After the first edit draft was done there wasn’t any song we had that matched the tone and pacing of the episode, so we wrote one for it. Essentially our first score we made for an episode.
It was challenging to write the song because I still wanted it to be a great, relistenable rock song in its own right. But after a lot of time and iterations, we finally hit the perfect presentation we were striving for.”
The accompanying short film follows two detectives investigating a mysterious disappearance before the case spirals into a tense hunt for a suspected killer. More than a traditional music video, it expands the band’s storytelling ambitions and reinforces their commitment to blending film with music.
“Saveyourself” is one of ASAVA’s most immersive releases to date. The song thrives on brooding tension, gradually building into explosive moments that mirror the suspense unfolding on screen. Rather than relying solely on heaviness, the band balances atmosphere with memorable hooks, giving the track lasting replay value. Its cinematic structure makes every transition feel purposeful, creating an experience that is just as engaging without the visual component. As another preview of Mahjong, “Saveyourself” showcases a band confidently pushing beyond the boundaries of a conventional metal release while refining their unique artistic identity.
