Fresh from performances at major festivals including The Great Escape, SXSW, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, punk duo Girl Tones are back with another explosive preview of their upcoming debut album, Precious. Sisters Kenzie and Laila Crowe unleash their latest single, “Pretty Face,” a gritty, fuzz-soaked track that finds the duo confronting the pressure to hide emotional pain behind an attractive exterior.
Produced by Brad Shultz of Cage The Elephant, the song arrives through his Parallel Vision label in partnership with Big Loud Rock, giving Girl Tones another major step forward as they continue establishing themselves as one of punk’s most exciting emerging acts.
“Pretty Face” wastes little time making its presence known. Muted guitar riffs create a tense, tightly wound foundation before the track erupts into a biting chorus. The sisters attack the song with commanding vocals and an unapologetically rough-around-the-edges performance style that fits perfectly with its subject matter.
Rather than celebrating appearances, the track turns its attention toward the darker reality underneath them. “Pretty Face” explores superficiality and the tendency to use beauty as a distraction from deeper pain, creating a sharp contrast between the song’s infectious energy and its more serious emotional message.
“Pretty Face” is Girl Tones at their most direct and confrontational. The production is deliberately gritty, with layers of fuzz and tightly controlled guitar work giving the song a raw punk-rock edge. There’s an immediacy to the arrangement that makes it feel built for a sweaty club stage just as much as a festival crowd.
The guitar work deserves particular attention. Those restrained, muted riffs establish tension without overwhelming the vocals, allowing the track to steadily build toward its powerful chorus. When the hook arrives, Girl Tones unleash everything they’ve been holding back, creating the song’s biggest and most satisfying moment.
