There is a strange emptiness that can follow a night that was supposed to mean nothing. For cinematic indie-pop artist Henry Morris, that emotional contradiction becomes the center of his latest single, “One Night Stand,” out now via Giant Music.
Written and co-produced by Morris alongside Kevin White, whose credits include BTS, Bazzi, and Artemas, the new track explores what happens when physical attraction collides with an unexpected need for emotional connection. Rather than romanticizing the fleeting encounter, Morris turns his attention toward the silence afterward the questions, loneliness, and desire for something deeper that can linger long after the night has ended.
“No matter how many times I get drunk at a bar and have a one night stand, the part that always stays with me is the quiet loneliness after they’ve gone,” Morris explains.
That honesty is central to Morris’s artistry. Since introducing his solo project in 2023, following his time as one half of indie duo Playyard, the artist has carved out a darker and more cinematic space for himself. His 2024 debut album, Jawbreaker, established that direction, embracing the thoughts and emotions that can be difficult to admit out loud. “One Night Stand” continues that trajectory, but with an especially intimate focus on the complicated relationship between desire, loneliness, and the hope that a temporary connection might somehow become permanent.
Morris’s path toward becoming a solo artist was shaped by experiences well beyond the studio. While attending college, he formed Playyard with his roommate and simultaneously pursued an economics degree. His friendship with artist Saint Levant would ultimately become another major turning point, leading Morris to work as a producer and collaborator and join Saint Levant on two world tours. Those experiences exposed him to different cultures, perspectives, and creative environments, ultimately helping Morris understand the kind of artist he wanted to become.
Henry Morris doesn’t treat “One Night Stand” as a song about sex. He treats it as a song about what happens when the sex is over. That distinction is what gives the latest single its emotional weight. On the surface, the title immediately suggests something temporary: two people meet, attraction takes over, and by morning, the connection disappears. Morris, however, is far more interested in the emotional aftermath than the encounter itself. “One Night Stand” lives in that uncomfortable space where someone tells themselves they wanted something casual, only to realize afterward that part of them was hoping for something more.
