Sydney-based singer-songwriter Holly Wild is embracing the messier side of friendship with her upcoming single “So Annoying,” arriving September 25 alongside a new music video. Rather than hiding the less flattering thoughts that can creep into even the closest friendships, Wild turns envy, comparison, and petty frustration into something playful, energetic, and surprisingly relatable. The track will serve as the latest preview of her debut album, Technicolour, due next month.
Since first stepping onto the scene in 2021, Wild has steadily expanded her creative footprint through music, television, and international collaborations. Her work has connected her with respected names throughout the industry, including producer David Arkwright, known for his work with James Arthur, Teddy Swims, and Katelyn Tarver, as well as Australian ARIA chart-topping artist Jolyon Petch.
With “So Annoying,” Wild steps into a more unruly and tongue-in-cheek version of her artistry. The track trades polished pop conventions for distorted guitar, driving percussion, gritty textures, and a vocal performance that moves between laid-back spoken delivery and raspy bursts of attitude. The result is deliberately imperfect and chaotic in all the right ways, matching the song’s subject matter.
At its heart, “So Annoying” explores the uncomfortable phenomenon of being jealous of someone you genuinely care about. Wild takes the kind of thoughts most people would probably keep to themselves; the comparisons, irrational criticisms, and tiny grievances and turns them into the foundation of the song. Instead of treating jealousy as something shameful, she finds the humor in recognizing just how ridiculous those feelings can become.
Wild describes the track as being inspired by “that one friend who makes everything look way too easy”; the person who seems effortlessly confident, attractive, successful, and completely unbothered. What began as an exaggerated writing exercise between Wild and her co-writer eventually became what she jokingly calls an anthem for “friend-vy,” capturing the strange mixture of affection and envy that can exist within a friendship.
The accompanying music video pushes that attitude even further. Set against gritty, street-art-inspired surroundings, the visual follows Wild and a friend through seemingly ordinary moments, including casually browsing shops. Those relaxed scenes are interrupted by direct-to-camera moments that expose the thoughts Wild is keeping just beneath the surface. Her exaggerated expressions and deliberately petty lip-syncing give the video a playful sense of confrontation while reinforcing the song’s sarcastic personality.
Rather than taking jealousy too seriously, “So Annoying” turns it into something listeners can laugh at and perhaps recognize in themselves. With its crunchy guitars, energetic drums, cheeky delivery, and unapologetically petty subject matter, Holly Wild’s latest single offers a colorful introduction to the world of Technicolour and another glimpse at the versatility of an artist continuing to carve out her own space.
