Kwasi Explores Love, Identity, and Inner Conflict on Genre-Bending “Room Full of Broken Hearts”

Naarm/Melbourne artist Kwasi is stepping into a more vulnerable space with his upcoming single “Room Full of Broken Hearts,” featuring Nathan Wong. Set for release September 30, the track finds the genre-defying artist wrestling with the complicated space between wanting connection and instinctively pulling away from it.

Known for merging hip-hop with punk and bringing an abrasive energy to his music, Kwasi takes a different approach on his latest release. “Room Full of Broken Hearts” trades some of his usual aggression for melancholic guitars, live drums, melodic vocals, and a more exposed emotional delivery. Wong adds another layer to the track with a soaring, emo-leaning chorus, while Kwasi’s rough-edged vocals maintain the intensity that has become part of his signature sound.

The contrast between the two vocal styles mirrors the song’s central tension. There is a push and pull throughout the track moments that feel open and emotionally charged alongside darker passages that suggest hesitation and self-protection. At its core, Kwasi is exploring what happens when the desire to love and be understood clashes with the fear of losing yourself in the process.

The single serves as another chapter in Outstanding MISFIT, Kwasi’s forthcoming debut album arriving October 16. Across its 14 tracks, the project follows his ongoing relationship with the “MISFIT” alter-ego, examining alienation, identity, belonging, and the process of accepting the parts of yourself that don’t fit neatly into one category.

For Kwasi, the album represents a shift in perspective rather than an attempt to find a single identity to settle into. As he explains;

“I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I existed somewhere between different worlds, and for a long time I thought I needed to figure out which one I belonged in. This album came from realising that maybe I don’t have to choose.”

That idea extends beyond the music itself. On Halloween, October 31, Kwasi will introduce audiences to the world of Outstanding MISFIT through “KWASI PRESENTS: THE SCORE — OUTSTANDING MISFIT” at Village Cinemas Rivoli. The immersive experience will combine an original short film with a live performance from Kwasi and his band, creating a continuous narrative between the screen and stage.

With “Room Full of Broken Hearts,” Kwasi continues pushing against the boundaries of his sound while allowing a more personal side of his artistry to take center stage. The result is a conflicted, emotionally charged track that sets the tone for an album built around embracing every version of yourself even the ones that don’t always feel like they belong.
