After stepping away following How Do You Feel?, Savings have returned with a renewed sense of purpose. Their latest single, “Stressed Out,” captures the uncertainty that led to their hiatus while embracing the optimism that comes with starting over. In this interview, the band opens up about burnout, rediscovering their passion for music, and why putting their well being first has made this new chapter feel more authentic than ever.
Now, with their new single, “Stressed Out,” Savings return with a renewed perspective and a sound that feels both familiar and refreshed. We caught up with the band to talk about the hiatus, rediscovering creativity, and why this new chapter is built on authenticity instead of pressure.
After How Do You Feel, what led the band to step away?
“When we started working on another record, everyone was dealing with personal situations that made it difficult to fully commit. Instead of pushing through it, we realized it was healthier to stop, focus on ourselves, and come back only when we were in a better place mentally. Looking back, it was the right decision.”
What did the hiatus teach you?
“The biggest lesson was realizing that burnout is real. We didn’t uncover some shocking truth about the band—we simply learned that taking care of ourselves has to come before everything else. Once we gave ourselves that space, making music became enjoyable again instead of feeling like an obligation.“
Why was “Stressed Out” the right song to introduce this new era?
“The song tells the story of a recording trip that ultimately didn’t produce the album we expected. At the time, everything felt uncertain, but we wanted to capture those emotions honestly. Even though things were difficult, we also realized the only way forward was to keep moving, and there’s hope in that.”
You’ve talked about stepping away from “the machine.” What did that experience feel like?
“We feel incredibly lucky to do this, but somewhere along the way we forgot to enjoy it. We were always focused on what came next instead of appreciating what was happening in the moment. While we still believe working hard is important, we also realized we needed more support around us. Building a stronger team has helped us find a healthier balance.“
Your sound continues to evolve. What inspired this latest direction?
“Bands like The Maine, The Band CAMINO, Movements, Citizen, Dominic Fike, and In Color all influenced us. More importantly, though, we stopped limiting ourselves. Everyone brought their own musical tastes into the writing process, which naturally expanded our sound while keeping the emotional core of Savings intact.”
How was the songwriting process different this time?
“There wasn’t any pressure. We wrote “Stressed Out” with our longtime friend and producer Kai Ross during a casual afternoon in his studio after the gym. We weren’t chasing expectations—we were just creating something because it felt fun. That freedom made the process feel effortless.“
Has returning changed how you measure success?
“Not really. We’re simply grateful to be making music again and playing shows with people who have continued supporting us. If we can keep creating songs we’re proud of and connect with our fans, everything else will work itself out.”
What emotions fueled “Stressed Out”?
“Reflection was a big part of it, but so was excitement. We were finally ready to move forward and acknowledge everything we’d experienced. The song recognizes the uncertainty we faced while also looking ahead with optimism.”
You handled the music video yourselves. What was that process like?
“It felt natural. We spent time together sharing ideas until one felt right, and the finished video reflects exactly who we are. More than anything, it captures the feeling of friends creating something they genuinely love together.”
What’s next for Savings?
“We’re approaching this chapter with gratitude. We want to keep writing music, keep playing shows, and continue seeing just how far this journey can take us. Right now, we’re simply excited to be back doing what we love.”
