There are breakups that leave you shattered, and then there are the ones that force you to sit with yourself long enough to understand that healing doesn’t happen all at once. ‘This Too Shall Pass’, the debut single from Naarm/Melbourne-based project Serge & The Currents, finds the humour, nostalgia and quiet sadness in that uncomfortable middle ground.
Arriving Friday, August 28, the track introduces Sergio Ercole in a new musical chapter one shaped by more than four decades of performing and composing across Italy, the United States and Australia. A Florence-born guitarist, composer and music educator, Ercole has spent years developing his craft, and Serge & The Currents gives that experience a distinctly guitar-led home.
Rather than presenting heartbreak as a devastating ballad, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ takes a more unexpected route. It moves. Shuffling drums, warm acoustic guitars and expressive lead work create an easygoing country-pop foundation, while Southwestern and Latin flourishes give the arrangement a personality that refuses to sit neatly inside one genre. That contrast is central to the song’s appeal.
On the surface, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ feels bright, relaxed and almost nostalgic. Beneath it, however, sits the lingering ache of someone attempting to convince themselves that they will eventually be okay. Ercole’s songwriting captures that contradiction beautifully: remembering the good times while simultaneously confronting the reasons things had to end.
He describes the song as:

That internal argument becomes the song’s emotional engine. There is regret, self-reflection and a little humour in looking back at the laughs, the wine and the decisions that ultimately led somewhere painful. The result is a debut that feels lived in rather than manufactured. Serge & The Currents aren’t trying to reinvent heartbreak; they’re exploring what it actually feels like to live through it. And sometimes, that means putting one foot in front of the other even when you’re still looking over your shoulder. Following its release, Serge & The Currents will celebrate the single with an intimate launch at Wesley Anne in Northcote on Sunday, September 13.
