There are certain songs that instantly transport you somewhere else. For a generation of alternative and heavy music fans, Underoath’s “Breathing In A New Mentality” is one of those songs. Now, years after Lost In The Sound Of Separation first arrived, the band is giving fans another opportunity to experience that era through a brand-new live performance from Vans Warped Tour’s Long Beach stop earlier this summer.
The timing couldn’t feel more fitting. As Underoath prepares to return to Vans Warped Tour in Mexico City, the band has released its main-stage performance of “Breathing In A New Mentality,” bringing one of its most recognizable songs back into the middle of the festival environment where so many fans first discovered bands like them.
For longtime listeners, there’s an undeniable sense of nostalgia attached to seeing Underoath on a Warped Tour stage again. The festival was more than a collection of bands; it was a summer tradition, a meeting place for different corners of alternative music, and for many fans, a formative part of growing up. Seeing Underoath return to that world creates the feeling of opening an old photo album and finding a moment you didn’t realize you missed so much.
And rather than choosing a song simply because it is familiar, the band selected “Breathing In A New Mentality” as its introduction. As Tim McTague explains, the choice was intentional. Underoath wanted to acknowledge the history they share with Warped Tour while also making it clear that they weren’t simply returning to relive the past. The song became a statement: the nostalgia is there, but the band is still moving forward.
Watching the performance, that distinction becomes especially important. This isn’t an attempt to recreate 2008. It’s Underoath bringing a song from that era into the present and allowing it to exist in front of a new generation of fans. That is what makes the performance particularly special.
Lost In The Sound Of Separation was released in 2008, during a period when Underoath had already become a defining name within the post-hardcore and metalcore scene. “Breathing In A New Mentality” carried the intensity that made the band such an important part of that era, and hearing it performed on a Warped Tour stage decades later connects two different generations of the band’s audience.
The Long Beach performance is also part of a much larger return to the road. Earlier this summer, Underoath played Washington, DC and Long Beach, California, while their Van Tour To Vans Warped Tour, presented by Vans with support from Held, brought the band into smaller independent venues around the country.
That intimate run offered longtime fans something considerably different from the festival experience. After spending years playing larger stages, there was something special about watching Underoath return to rooms that recreated the closeness of their earlier touring days. But the nostalgia doesn’t stop with Warped Tour.
This fall, the band will appear at Louder Than Life, Four Chord Music Festival, Furnace Festival, Aftershock Festival, and Sick New World before embarking on a massive celebration of another landmark moment in its history: the 20th anniversary of Define The Great Line.
For that tour, Underoath is bringing along longtime friends August Burns Red, Atreyu, As Cities Burn, and Emery; bands whose histories are deeply connected to the same scene and era that helped shape Underoath’s career.
There is something incredibly fitting about that lineup. These aren’t simply acts sharing a bill. They represent a musical community that grew alongside one another, played the same rooms, traveled the same highways, and helped define a sound that still resonates with fans today. Now, those memories are becoming new experiences.
The Define The Great Line anniversary tour isn’t simply an excuse to look backward. It’s a celebration of how far these artists, and the people who grew up listening to them, have come. Some of those fans may have discovered Underoath through Warped Tour years ago, while others are hearing the band for the first time today. Either way, “Breathing In A New Mentality” feels like the perfect soundtrack for the moment. It’s nostalgic without being stuck in the past. It’s familiar without feeling old. And most importantly, it reminds longtime fans why these songs mattered in the first place.
