US alternative-pop quartet In Color step into a more shadowy and emotionally vulnerable space with their latest single, “Marionette,” released through Big Loud Rock. Accompanied by a visually atmospheric music video, the track explores the complicated aftermath of walking away from someone while still feeling emotionally and physically connected to them.
Rather than approaching heartbreak with a straightforward pop structure, “Marionette” allows its tension to build gradually. Dreamlike synths and a steady, pulsing bass create an almost hypnotic foundation, giving the song a sense of being caught in a cycle that is difficult to escape. There is something intentionally restrained about the production, allowing the emotion to linger instead of rushing toward an explosive payoff.
