Victoria-based musician Nick Carver is carving out his own space in the blues and roots world, and he has no interest in following a predetermined path. His latest single, “Railroad,” takes aim at the genre’s overused imagery and predictable storytelling, delivering a rough-edged blend of blues-rock and garage-inspired grit. The track serves as the lead single from his upcoming self-titled EP, arriving November 13, alongside an official music video that captures the song’s unconventional spirit.
Stepping away from the full-band format, Carver embraces a stripped-back approach built around lap steel guitar, stomp box, and unfiltered vocals. The result is a sound that feels raw, restless, and unapologetically Australian, allowing imperfections and experimentation to become part of the music’s identity rather than something to polish away.
“Railroad” challenges the familiar themes that have long shaped blues and roots music. Instead of leaning on romanticised images and stories that don’t reflect his own life, Carver uses the genre as a foundation for something more personal. His approach isn’t about abandoning the blues; it’s about pushing it forward and making room for voices and experiences that fall outside its traditional mould.
As Carver explains, the song reflects his reluctance to borrow a mythology that doesn’t belong to him. He says he knows little about railroads, roosters, or swamps, and refuses to pretend otherwise. Instead, he sees blues as a way to communicate his own experiences and tell stories that feel genuine to who he is. That honesty sits at the heart of “Railroad,” turning a familiar musical tradition into something distinctly his own.
The accompanying music video, filmed and edited by Sam Cross of Yewa Films, further amplifies the single’s unpredictable character. Shot in black and white, the visuals feature Carver wearing theatrical, clown-like makeup as he sings and plays drums with erratic, almost unsettling movements. The stark presentation mirrors the track’s unruly energy, reinforcing its rejection of conventional blues aesthetics.
Carver’s willingness to challenge expectations is already gaining attention. His previous single, “Stones You Throw,” reached the top of the AMRAP Charts across the overall, regional, and country, blues and roots categories, while his work has received support from Double J, ABC Country, ABC VIC Statewide, AAA Backstage, and Aus Music Scene.
With “Railroad,” Nick Carver makes his intentions clear: the blues doesn’t have to remain confined to the stories it has always told. By embracing his own perspective and refusing to imitate what came before, he delivers a track that honours the genre’s grit while carving out a sound entirely his own.
