Interviewer: “For Andy” feels incredibly intimate. At what point did you realize this song was something you wanted to share with the world instead of keeping it just between you and your partner?
Shepup: “I decided to share it with the world after performing it live a bunch of times. Audience members would come up to me after the show and tell me they really loved it. I am also proud of my relationship and saw it as a good way to celebrate that and collaborate with my partner artistically.“
Interviewer: You described the song as both a queer love song and a manifesto. What does that word manifesto mean to you in the context of this relationship?
Shepup: “My first voice memo of this song was recorded nearly a month after dating Andy. I was constantly writing up little lists of things I wanted to do with them and day dreaming about all the adventures we’d have.“
Shepup: You surprised Andy by debuting the song live. What was going through your mind before that performance, and how did they react?
Shepup: “I was a little nervous because again I wrote this song shortly after we dated and I was worried it would come off too intense too soon. But really the root of the song is innocent and it was received well. They were sobbing in the audience.”
Interviewer: How important is it for you to write openly about sapphic love without filtering or softening your experiences?
Shepup: “I’d say it’s important. I’ve never been able to write a love song in previous relationships that felt genuine. This one came so naturally to me. I think the more honest I am in songwriting the easier the song is to write. Releasing this song has in a way, acted as a means to come out to people I’m typically closed off too. I live two separate lives most of the time with my job and my music world and sharing this song is allowing listeners to see more of my life.“
Interviewer: Your vocal delivery is gentle yet emotionally captivating. How do you approach conveying vulnerability without overperforming it?
Shepup: “That’s sweet! I think in writing lyrics it is my responsibility to speak truthfully about a topic or else it won’t deliver well in your voice. It is my moto in songwriting. I have trouble even lying about microscopic/ subtle details like a color. My voice has been my biggest tool in sharing my stories.”
Interviewer: Does “For Andy” hint at the direction of a larger project, or is it a standalone chapter in your artistic journey?
Shepup: “This is a standalone single. At the end of the day, I was most excited about this song and wanted to collaborate with my partner in this way. I wanted to lead with love after a two year pause on releasing music. In the last two years I’ve been recording a ton of songs. I have an EP that will follow covering darker times in my life. And eventually a full length album.“
Interviewer: What do you hope queer listeners, especially those discovering or embracing their identities, take away from this song?
Shepup: “It felt very challenging to fully come out of the closet so publicly and intimately in this way and yet I still did it and I’m okay! In fact I am relieved I’m not hiding this part of myself anymore. Regardless of identity, I wanted to celebrate love. There’s U-hauling and then there’s writing a full blown love song one month into dating. But we’ve been together for a while now and it seems like a good time to share the song.”
