On September 24th, I had the honor of witnessing soap opera/love song greatness when the Spanish dynamic duo Sin Bandera came to play in Fresno, CA, on a Thursday night. What made that night especially personal to me was that it was my father’s birthday, and I got to take them to the show thanks to their label and promoters. That night would prove to be one of the best shows and birthdays.
The reason most people know this group is almost without even realizing it! Sin Bandera were featured on theme songs for Spanish soap operas, which were huge throughout the 2000s. They were the soundtrack to your first love, your first heartbreak, or that breakup you just couldn’t get over. Sin Bandera consists of the duo Mexican singer-songwriter Leonel García and Argentine-Mexican singer-songwriter Noel Schajris; the guitar and piano duo!
As they were the only band playing that night, things started off a little slow. They came out around 8:30 and promised about two hours of music, as long as the venue didn’t kick them out; which they absolutely delivered on! The crowd chanted for their favorite hits, and the singers jokingly kept saying, “Oh, it’s 20 songs until that one!”
Sin Bandera played a mixture of their new, middle, and older hits. You could immediately tell why they were as big as they were. The song choices and flow just worked so smoothly. At first, you were like, “Why would they play this first?” and then, a few songs later, you were like, “Ooooh, that makes sense!” It was a perfect balance.
They chose the name Sin Bandera, which means “without a flag,” as a statement that they didn’t want to be labeled and simply wanted to create music and promote unity. What made them famous, aside from their musicianship, was how perfectly they complemented each other. Their harmonies are so in sync that they can be haunting. Despite being a group for many years and winning Latin Grammys, they have not lost a pep in their step! Having a two-hour live show can be daunting if you don’t have the catalog to support it, but they absolutely do and they pulled it off without a hitch.
The show didn’t feel long at all because they were so engaged with the crowd. They even went into the audience to pump everyone up, while their incredibly talented group of musicians helped bring the songs to life. It was truly a show to behold. I am honored to have witnessed these legends at work and, even more so, to have experienced in person the music my parents listened to. And getting to share that experience with my dad on his birthday made the night that much more special.
