Released via Smoking Room, Speculative Fiction finds Smirk expanding beyond straightforward punk, with songwriter Nick Vicario reflecting on change, regret, and the uneasy transition from one chapter of life to the next. Rather than focusing on youthful rebellion, the album explores the emotional aftermath of past decisions, pairing introspective storytelling with infectious guitar-driven melodies that blur the line between punk and power pop.
A longtime fixture of Portland’s underground music scene, Vicario has spent years performing in punk, hardcore, and indie projects before channeling those experiences into Smirk. Since launching the solo project, he’s earned recognition for crafting hook-filled songs that balance raw punk energy with thoughtful songwriting, making Speculative Fiction another compelling step in his evolution as an artist.
Speculative Fiction marks Smirk’s third full-length album and showcases a more refined side of Nick Vicario’s songwriting. Written entirely by Vicario, the record features contributions from friends and collaborators, including members of Ceremony, RIXE, Advertisement, and Smirk’s live band. Most of the album was recorded in his home studio before being completed with additional recording and mixing from longtime collaborators.
On Speculative Fiction, Smirk embraces a more measured approach without losing its punk roots. The album leans into catchy melodies and thoughtful songwriting, trading frantic energy for a sound that feels more focused and intentional. It’s a natural progression for Vicario, reflecting both his growth as a songwriter and a new chapter in his life.
