Whisper Doll Steps Into Its Dreamiest Era Yet With Lucky Clover

New York City band Whisper Doll has officially opened the doors to a new chapter with the release of their sophomore album, Lucky Clover, out now through Take Care Records.

Across 10 tracks, the band creates a world that feels simultaneously delicate and assured. Fronted by Fiona Tagami, Whisper Doll balances airy guitars, propulsive rhythms and soft-edged melodies with lyrics that aren’t afraid to sit with uncertainty, desire, tenderness and self-discovery. The result is an album that feels intimate without ever becoming fragile.

The release arrives alongside a new visual for the album’s title track, “Lucky Clover,” with a particularly personal star of the video: Fiona’s cat, Lucky. The story behind the song is almost as sweet as its sound. Fiona traces its beginnings to a shimmering riff sent to her by bandmate Maya, which eventually became the foundation for a song intentionally built around feelings of innocence, optimism and uncomplicated joy.

At the time, Fiona had also become attached to a cat who lived outside a neighborhood bodega. The fluffy grey-and-white cat would greet her whenever she visited and watch from the window as she walked away. When the bodega gave Fiona the opportunity to adopt him as a birthday gift, the timing felt almost magical.

She named him Lucky. That experience became intertwined with the song’s meaning: the sensation of realizing that, for once, life seems to be giving you exactly what you didn’t know you needed.

“I wanted this song to feel hopeful and sparkly and sweet,” Fiona explains, describing a melody deliberately shaped to evoke the innocence of a children’s choir. The song ultimately became a reflection of a period when “lots of things fell into place” and she felt incredibly fortunate.

A Year of Unfolding

Lucky Clover wasn’t unveiled all at once. Instead, Whisper Doll spent the months leading up to its release gradually revealing the album through a series of singles and accompanying videos, giving listeners pieces of the record’s larger emotional landscape. The campaign began with “Am I a Knife,” released in April alongside news of the band’s signing to Take Care Records. Twinkling synths and a forceful bassline eventually give way to a huge chorus, with Fiona confronting the ways feminine desire can become distorted or diminished through the expectations of the male gaze.

Then came “Bluebells,” a brighter and more buoyant offering that pairs upbeat guitar work with a distinctly dreamlike atmosphere. Its accompanying visual leans into the band’s whimsical side, drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland and filming on the Bard campus. By August, Whisper Doll had unveiled “So Sweet,” a more reflective piece born from Fiona’s return to her childhood home. Its delicate instrumentation mirrors the song’s inward-looking nature, while the video places two separated lovers on an elementary school theater stage as they gradually discover a shared sense of reality.

The visual was co-directed by Fiona and Owen Lehman, whose directing credits include work with Geese, MX LONELY and Lip Critic. Lehman has helmed every video connected to the Lucky Clover era. September brought “Sunsigns,” the final preview before the album’s arrival. Fueled by the dizzying rush of a new crush, the song looks toward astrology and the universe for clues, pairing Fiona’s energetic vocals with shimmering guitar lines. The accompanying video, co-directed by Fiona and Sage Leopold of Venetian Blinds, brings tarot into the picture as the characters search for answers.

Taken together, the singles offered glimpses of what makes Lucky Clover work as a complete record: sweetness alongside uncertainty, fantasy alongside reality and confidence existing comfortably beside vulnerability.

From New York Stages to the World

Whisper Doll’s reputation extends beyond their recordings. The band has become a recognizable presence within New York’s rock community thanks to their immersive live shows, while their touring history has taken them throughout the United States and Japan. During the buildup to Lucky Clover, the band brought new material to audiences at New Colossus Festival and RockNite NY, as well as performances alongside Gift and Horse Jumper of Love.

Now, they’ll officially celebrate the album with a hometown release show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on October 9. The evening will feature performances from Buff Ginger and Cyanotype, with DJ sets from Starcleaner Reunion, Computerwife and Shower Curtain rounding out the night.

With Lucky Clover, Whisper Doll aren’t simply presenting another collection of dream-pop-inflected rock songs. They’re creating a record about finding beauty in uncertainty, allowing yourself to want things, and recognizing the rare moments when life feels unexpectedly kind. And sometimes, as the album’s title suggests, feeling lucky is as simple as finding something or someone you never want to let go of.
