Fresno was treated to a night of metal that refused to stick to just one sound. Bringing together three bands with distinctly different approaches to heavy music, the evening showcased everything from progressive, speed-driven metal to groove-heavy riffs and traditional thrash. We were fortunate to have Xoth, a fantasy-inspired progressive/speed metal outfit, Slackjaw, delivering their take on groove metal, and Havok, bringing the old-school thrash metal energy. Three bands, three different sounds, and one thing in common: an undeniable love for heavy music.

Kicking things off was Seattle’s own Xoth, a four-piece that first formed in 2014. Since their arrival, the band has been associated with a variety of metal subgenres, but what makes them particularly interesting is that they don’t seem interested in fitting neatly into any one of them. Their sound pulls from progressive metal, death metal, blackened thrash, and speed metal, creating something that feels uniquely their own. One of my favorite moments came from the band’s front-man introducing some of the songs with descriptions of the strange, otherworldly stories behind them. At one point, he casually introduced a track about an interdimensional being before the band proceeded to absolutely shred our faces off. It was an entertaining contrast between the almost humorous storytelling and the sheer technical intensity that followed.
Xoth delivered an impressive combination of technical musicianship and infectious songwriting. Their ability to make such complex arrangements feel engaging rather than overwhelming is something that deserves more recognition. They’re the kind of band that makes you want to dig deeper into their discography after seeing them live. Hopefully, this is only the beginning of more people discovering what they have to offer.

Next up was Slackjaw, a band I hadn’t had the opportunity to hear before this show. However, I did get the pleasure of talking with the guys before they took the stage, and something told me we were in for a good time. I can confidently say I wasn’t disappointed. From the moment they stepped onto the stage, the energy was contagious. And it wasn’t just one member carrying the performance; every single person on that stage looked like they were having the time of their lives. That kind of chemistry is difficult to fake, and it made their set even more enjoyable to watch.
There’s something refreshing about a band that embraces the independent route and makes things happen on its own terms. In an industry where getting noticed and building a following can feel like an uphill battle, Slackjaw has continued carving out its own path. Their music is infectious, groove-oriented, and packed with the kind of riffs that practically demand a headbang. If I had to describe the vibe, I’d say there’s a little Pantera mixed with Lamb of God, bringing that unmistakable American metal attitude. Between the grooves, the aggression, and the band’s chemistry onstage, Slackjaw quickly became one of my highlights of the evening. I’m looking forward to hearing their upcoming album and seeing where their journey takes them. If this performance was any indication, they’ve got plenty of potential ahead of them.

Closing out the night was Havok, bringing things back to the roots with some good old-fashioned thrash metal. The band has recently signed with a new label and has been keeping fans engaged with new singles, proving that they’re still very much active and have no intention of stepping away from the scene. One thing I’ve always appreciated about Havok is their consistency. While the metal landscape continues to change, they’ve never seemed interested in abandoning the sound that helped establish them. They’ve survived the ups and downs of the thrash revival era while remaining true to their identity, and there’s something to be said for a band that knows exactly who they are.
Their performance was exactly what you would hope for from a thrash metal band: no unnecessary theatrics, no gimmicks, just relentless riffs, aggressive vocals, and plenty of circle pits. Sometimes, you don’t need anything more than a band getting onstage and delivering exactly what they’ve built their reputation around. It’s important to have bands like Havok continuing to carry that torch. With so many different directions that modern metal can take, performances like this serve as a reminder of the roots that helped shape the genre and influenced generations of musicians. Thrash metal isn’t going anywhere, and Havok made sure everyone in Fresno knew it.
Three bands, three different approaches to metal, and one unforgettable night. Whether you came for the technical wizardry of Xoth, the infectious grooves of Slackjaw, or the relentless thrash of Havok, there was something for every metalhead in the room. That’s what makes nights like these so special: getting to experience different corners of the metal world under one roof while discovering bands you might not have otherwise given a listen.
